US Green Ribbon Schools 

New Application Deadline - December 31

Please send an Intent to Nominate email by November 30. It helps with planning the review of nominations. However, it is not required.


Missouri Green Schools coordinates two programs

Missouri Green Schools

  • a non-competitive program a school can use to assess their "green" accomplishments and set goals for the future
  • a school works through three levels in three areas at their own pace to document their efforts
  • a school can enroll any time, there is no deadline
  • a school can use its documented accomplishments in Missouri Green Schools to nominate itself for the USED GRS program
  • when a school completes a level, it will receive a certificate, be recognized on the MGS website, in the MEEA newsletter and at the MO Green Schools and Environmental Education Conference.


US Education Department Green Ribbon Schools

  • USED GRS is a competitive program providing national recognition of a school's green efforts (open to public, charter and private K-12 schools)
  • to nominate itself, a school completes a comprehensive and detailed assessment of accomplishments in three areas
  • nominations are submitted to Missouri Green Schools by December 31(intent to nominate is requested by November 30)
  • a team of experienced reviewers scores the nomination forms and selects up to five schools to send forward to USED
  • the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education submits the state nominees on or before February 1 every year




To enroll in either program you will need a Lead person, a school Green Team,
and at least three green goals your school would like to accomplish.

2017 Missouri Green Ribbon Schools

In 2017 three Missouri Schools were honored for their accomplishments in
sustainability, health and environmental literacy
by the U.S. Department of Education's Green Ribbon Schools Program.

Missouri Green Schools is a program of the Missouri Environmental Education Association

The Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools is a national program recognizing schools that achieve in three areas, Sustainability, Health and Learning. In Missouri, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and MEEA coordinate particitpation in Green Ribbon Schools.
